PREPARING FOR YOUR SESSION IS ALL ABOUT WHAT FEELS GOOD FOR YOU.

Your style is unique, but I’ve got a few pointers for making the most out of your photos.

AS YOU ARE.

Before we dive into locations and wardrobe, I want to talk about approach. I treat this as a time to slow down, be present with your partner, and for us to get to know each other. My hope is to photograph you as you are, imperfect, excited, grateful, in a way that feels easy. You don’t need to look at the camera and smile unless it feels right in the moment. I may ask you to look towards me here and there, but mostly, I want you to interact with your partner. Hold hands, walk and talk, scrunch your face as you laugh, roll your eyes at a corny joke, talk with your hands, lean on each other as you may on a special date together. Whatever rings true for you. Ok, now for the fun stufff…

COLORS, PATTERNS, AND FLARE.

I suggest a natural, earthy, or muted color palette. Bright colors can be distracting and not complementary to skin tones. White and black often work well. I suggest solids, but as someone who lives in my striped overalls I get the desire to have a little fun. Flannels, floral dresses, quilted coats all could be great - but coordinate with your partner. You’ll want to make sure you’re both dressing for the same season and that your colors are complementary.

I suggest bringing 2-3 options. If your outfit is simple, you could add some flare with jewelry, sunglasses, hats, a bright lipstick.

MAKE IT COMFY.

The most important thing is being comfortable. If you’re not naturally comfortable in front of the camera, I highly recommend starting with an outfit you can move in and feels like you! Think…first date or job interview for a dream job - not something stuffy, just what makes you feel confident, playful or ready to try new things.

LOCATION.

I love a good cozy place we can make our own. I have some favorite places, but the best is hearing about where you love to go! We could shoot at your home, a favorite neighborhood or park, the coast, the gorge, or in the middle of the city. I can help you come up with something that will be special, fun, and feel like you! You’ll just want to dress appropriately for the climate. If it’s cold out, bring a coat that would be nice in photographs or a beanie to keep those ears warm. If we’re climbing on rocks, bring your boots.

I will chime in if I think the location won’t lend itself to best light. Typically under green trees, like in a forest doesn’t allow for great light. Think open space for light and calming vibes.

COMMUNICATE AND HAVE FUN WITH IT!

I’m all for keeping it simple. Communicate with each other in advance and the shoot will be a fun celebration of you. This is about your connection, how you are together. Whatever makes you feel your most comfortable self, let’s do that.

Some other things that may be fun to bring: letters to each other, tequila shooters, a small speaker for music, a blanket, a dog. I’m pretty down for most things, and will be excited with your vision!

OPTIONAL EXERCISE.

If you’re still feeling anxious, here’s an exercise to try!

Sit with your partner or just by your self and answer these questions:

  • How do you want to look back at this chapter in your relationship?

  • Are there places that make you both feel peaceful or connected?

  • What are some recent favorite memories together and why?

  • What are the little things you love about your partner?

This is a chance to make a new memory together that’s fun and meaningful!
